MY E-WEEK GULF OF BARATTI
GUIDED E-BIKE EXCURSIONS FOR GROUPS: THE ETRUSCAN COSTS AND THE GULF OF FOLLONICA BY PEDAL ASSISTED BIKE.
Once it was an unhealthy swamp, a land occupied by herds and drovers along the Tyrrhenian coast. It was the ‘bitter Maremma’ and no one envied those who went there to work. Inland, among the hills, miners continued to quarry minerals, just like the Etruscans centuries before.
This was the Maremma until the beginning of the twentieth century.
Today, having reclaimed the coastal plain and abandoned the mining activities, it has become a holiday destination and a reference point for those who love cycling. Along the Tuscan coast you can cycle twelve months a year and it is the only place in Italy where professional teams can complete their training without the pitfalls of traffic and adverse weather. There are cycle paths and quiet roads set in a beautiful landscape. If you have an E-bike, even the hardest climbs become a pleasure.
We offer you a series of one-day guided tours through this magical territory.

DAILY EXCURSIONS
DAILY EXCURSIONS
DAY 1 / SATURDAY
Guests make their own way to the Poggio all’Agnello Sport & Active Holidays in Stazione di Populonia by 4pm. Meeting with the guide, presentation of the week and introduction to the use of E-bike.
DAY 2 / SUNDAY: difficulty * – Stazione Populonia-Populonia-Baratti-Stazione Populonia
First day of contact with the E-bike, learning how to use it, with a short climb to the village of Populonia. Then we will descend again to Baratti to visit the necropolis of San Cerbone and, weather permitting, to swim in the clear waters of the Gulf of Baratti.
DAY 3 / MONDAY: difficulty ** – Stazione Populonia-S. Vincenzo-Castagneto C.-Suvereto-Venturina-Stazione Populonia
Along the cycle path that runs alongside the pine forest of Rimigliano we will come to San Vincenzo.
Then, along a dirt road that runs parallel to the S.S. Aurelia, we reach Donoratico, crossing an area characterised by vast expanses of vineyards, once the feud of the Della Gherardesca Counts. Slowly climbing towards Castagneto Carducci, the village where the poet Giosuè spent part of his childhood, we will eventually come to Sassetta, continuing over the hills onto the road that will start its pleasant descent, round an infinite number of bends, to Suvereto, just a few kilometres from the end of the itinerary.
DAY 4 / TUESDAY: difficulty *** – Stazione Populonia-Orti Bottagone-Follonica-Cala Violina-P. Ala-Follonica-Stazione Populonia
The almost completely flat route will initially take us to the WWF Oasis of Orti Bottagone, where we can admire the flamingos performing their picturesque dances. We will continue along the coast, crossing the town of Follonica along the cycle path, which will lead us to Marina di Scarlino, a recently built tourist harbour. On a dirt road closed to motorised traffic, we will cycle to the beaches of Cala Martina and Cala Violina, as far as Punta Ala, from where we will enjoy a magnificent view of the little island of Sparviero and some of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.
DAY 5 / WEDNESDAY: rest day
Sports enthusiasts can choose to spend the day in the heated outdoor Olympic swimming pool at Poggio all’Agnello or play tennis on one of the four courts available. Crossing your legs, clasping a book or listening to music on a deckchair by the pool could be the third “sporting” option, which will be a lot less tiring!
DAY 6 / THURSDAY: difficulty *** – Stazione Populonia-Casalappi-Montebamboli-Massa M.-Montioni-Suvereto-Stazione Populonia
With our batteries charged we’ll be ready tackle the long day ahead, which includes climbs to Montebamboli and Massa Marittima, where, during the stop for the visit to the Mining Museum, we will take the opportunity to “fill up” our E-bikes with energy again. The return trip is via the Marsiliana Farm, one of centres for the breeding and selection of Maremma horses, and then we will cross Montioni Natural Park and the River Cornia plain, dotted with vineyards, until we reach Suvereto.
DAY 7 / FRIDAY: difficulty * – Stazione Populonia-Lumiere-Parco San Silvestro-Campiglia M.-Venturina-Stazione Populonia
A leisurely day as far as cycling is concerned, dedicated to visiting the Archaeological and Mining Park of San Silvestro, with its mining machinery museum, along with the remains of the mining village of Rocca di San Silvestro, and exploring a stretch of the old mines, some of which can be travelled on a little yellow train. We will make a quick foray into the old town of Campiglia Marittima, climbing up to the ruins of the fort, which offers a view that, on clear days, sweeps to the northernmost tip of Corsica.
DAY 8 / SATURDAY:
